Katy, TX – March 14-15, 2015 – SWR-TX-179, Thunderbird Composite Squadron Color Guard was honored with an invitation by the Katy American Legion to present the colors at the recent Southland Conference Basketball Playoffs.   This event was televised by ESPN 2. A sold-out crowd was present at Merrill Center Stadium both Saturday and Sunday, making the energy of the spectators a truly electric experience. The crowd went wild! It’s no wonder this event is called “March Madness”.

Two Color Guard teams comprised of cadets from the squadron’s past and current Color Guard members were at the ready. C/CMSgt Ethan Ramos, C/SSgt Lance Saunders, C/SSgt Destiny Suobite, C/CMSgt Hunter Wright comprised Saturday’s team. On Sunday, C/CMSgt Zach Lexa, C/CMSgt Ethan Ramos, C/CMSgt Robert Smead, and C/CMSgt Hunter Wright presented the colors.

As the ESPN 2 cameras rolled and the maximum capacity crowd cheered, the Thunderbird Squadron Color Guard teams proudly marched onto the court. Presenting to such a large viewing audience, both in stadium and televised live, may be daunting to some, but the two teams proved to be laser-focused as they delivered a truly seamless performance both days. Their dedication, commitment and hard work was evident in their well-disciplined precision in marching, presenting arms and in presenting the American flag with dignity, patriotism and respect.

Through their fervent involvement in the community, Thunderbird Squadron’s reputation for excellence is highly coveted. The two Color Guard teams truly shined in showcasing one aspect of many facets of service the Thunderbird Squadron offers to the broader community. Their skillsets exemplify the camaraderie, team work and service which Thunderbird Squadron is known. The cadets appearance in such a well-publicized and televised event is another way we strive to interest a large population to inquire about who we are and what we do and how we serve our communities. Civil Air Patrol strives to welcome new members. Thunderbird Squadron’s Color Guard teams received positive feedback for their presentation of the colors during this March Madness event.
